Cesar Arechiga (B. 1980, Mexico)
Born and raised in Guadalajara, Arechiga’s work aims to raise social and environmental awareness of the waste we produce, and the ways in which our trash can be transformed into beauty. The collage element creates a 3D effect, allowing the art to exist on the canvas and in the space beyond it. Having been personally affected by the drug violence in Mexico, his work speaks volumes about ongoing issues that cease to subside. Politically charged and powerful, Arechiga’s images are an interpretation of society and all it has to offer: love, beauty, materialism, corruption, religion, war, and creation. Arechiga layers his canvases with acrylic, oil, and various other materials, adding texture and depth to his large- scale pieces. His most recent collection of work was inspired by the period he spent living in NYC, where he was surprised by the amount of waste and garbage he saw. He aims to create social awareness of the waste that surrounds us. Discarded materials found around New York City are used along with traditional materials to illustrate this point.
